I agree and hope that more people with a chronic illness, including their families, would choose to die with dignity. I’d even want that for myself (and yes, DNR for me, please). I hope that more doctors would also refer their terminal patients to hospice care so that their remaining days could be more fruitful and meaningful, so that they could die with dignity and their relatives and friends could remember their last days as ones filled with peace and joy. And no, I don’t think that there is anything wrong with admitting to patients and their families that there is not much that medicine can do to prolong their lives but that medicine can still make whatever is remaining of their lives to be of quality.
